2010-2011 Library Budget Message
Sensitive to the difficult economic times with which we are all faced, the Library Board has prepared its budget for the 2010-11 fiscal year that requires only a 1.44% increase in taxes, well below the increase in the 2009 cost of living index of 2.3%.
In delivering this budget, the Board has held the line on spending in most areas while reducing expenditures in some budget lines and adding only to those key areas that it believes are essential to the Library’s mission:
"To serve as a center for the management and dissemination of information. To make available print and non-print material of contemporary interest and permanent value. To provide a facility for cultural, civic and educational activities."
The green initiative implemented last year has resulted in reductions in expenditures for heating, lighting and air conditioning as well as printing and mailing. The Library's website, www.manhassetlibrary.org, has been redesigned to make it more user friendly and informative. Circulation in all areas, including adult and children's books, DVDs and CDs is up from last year as is attendance at the Library's many programs, which are designed to appeal to all sectors of the Manhasset community. Neighborhood community groups are making good use of the Library's Community Room for their varied programs and the Quiet Study Rooms are filled to capacity on many days and evenings.
These are trying times and the Library's resources are more necessary than ever for many of our Manhasset residents. The Library holds a unique place in our community, like no other...It's your Manhasset Public Library.
