Manhasset Public Library Community Room Art Hanging Policy
The Manhasset Public Library is not an art gallery or a museum. Artworks are hung in the Community Room solely for the enjoyment of Manhasset Library patrons. Artworks considered for hanging are limited to those that can be hung from the picture rail in the Community Room and that do not project substantially away from the wall or occupy any floor space.
The Fine Arts Advisory Committee has jurisdiction to select artworks that are suitable for hanging based on their artistic merit, quality of execution, and interest to the Manhasset community.
Three months prior to hanging the artworks the artist must submit, for approval by the Committee, photographs of every work offered for hanging. These photographs must be picked up by the artist when the artworks are removed from the Community Room.
The artworks selected for hanging by the Fine Arts Advisory Committee must be delivered to the Library’s Community Room by the artist for hanging at the time and date agreed upon in advance by the Committee. A member of the Committee and the artist must be present during installation.
All artwork must be removed promptly by the artist at the time and date agreed in advance. Artworks cannot be stored at the library.
All artworks must be properly framed and wired by the artist. All works are to be hung on wires and hooks provided by the library, which are to remain when the works are removed. No nails are to be used. Typed lists, without prices, corresponding to numbered exhibits must be provided at the time of installation.
Any proposed copy for a press release or any other publicity, and photographs, must be submitted to the library for approval six weeks in advance of the proposed opening date of the exhibition. Dissemination of all approved publicity, including invitations to any reception, is the responsibility of the artist.
The library will not act as intermediary in the sale of artworks, but will provide names and addresses of the artists on request. Interested parties must contact the artist directly.
(This policy is part of the Application for Consideration of Art for Hanging in the Community Room and the application along with this policy was adopted at the April 9, 2008 Board of Trustee meeting.
