As a native New Yorker, I am drawn to New York themes, particularly those rare, quiet, reflective moments amidst the normal chaos of the city. Edward Hopper and other members of the “Ash Can School” are a big influence on my work; especially in the way they depict how one can be “alone” in a crowd. Unlike Hopper, however, iI am drawn to subjects that can be represented in an almost poster-like manner by an arrangement of big, simple, colorful shapes. Working in an impressionistic style, I strive to depict subjects in as few paint strokes as possible, allowing the viewer’s eye and mind to fill in the detail.
