Greentree Foundation was established by John (“Jock”) Hay Whitney and Betsey Cushing Whitney in 1982. The Foundation organizes programs and hosts meetings for the advancement of peace, human rights, and cooperation among nations; practices sustainable land and wildlife management; and makes grants to support local Long Island philanthropies.
Mr. and Mrs. Whitney envisioned Greentree as the ideal environment to promote peace by providing a space to resolve divergent perspectives among people and nations. In keeping with this vision, the Foundation hosts the United Nations and other internationally-focused nonprofit organizations, whose meetings have addressed a number of global issues. The Foundation is also dedicated to environmental sustainability, embracing innovative solutions and creating programs in the areas of sustainable and wildlife management. In continuing the philanthropic tradition of the Whitney family, the Foundation has dispersed more than $15 million in grants to support education, social services and other activities in Manhasset and other Long Island communities.
Through its mission to advance peace, environmental sustainability and local philanthropy Greentree Foundation is working to improve the world we live in from the local community to the world stage.
