Members of the MPL staff have been reading, watching and listening up a storm this week! Here are our recommendations – let us know how you’re doing!

Amanda G. – Circulation Dept.
Bad Blood by John Carreyrou is the story of a Wall Street Journal reporter revealing one of the biggest cases of corporate fraud to come out of Silicon Valley. This book is a real page-turner – the fact that it is a true story makes it all the more enveloping! Available on Libby/Overdrive as ebook and audio book

Elaine N. – Circulation Dept.
I’m reading Searching for Sylvie Lee by Jean Kwok. The book is a journey through a family’s sacrifices to make a better life for their two daughters. A heart-felt story about family, love, and secrets. Available on Libby/Overdrive as eBook and audio book

Kristen G. – Circulation Dept.
My latest read was Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid. The premise involves a young black woman wrongly accused of kidnapping the white child she is babysitting for. A light read that asks some deep questions. Reese’s Book Club Pick – one to put on hold! Available on Libby/Overdrive as eBook and audio book

Stephanie C.  – Circulation Dept.
I’ve just finished the second book in Louise Penny’s Inspector Gamache series – A Fatal Grace. The first book, Still Life, is available now on Libby. My next book is Sold on a Monday, by Kristina McMorris. I’ve seen many patrons borrow this historical fiction set during the depression, and my hold just came through on Libby.

Classics – Available on Libby!

Dracula – by Bram Stoker. The gothic novel published in 1897 is written as journal entries. A young English lawyer travels to Transylvania to meet his client, Count Dracula.   Compare the book to the many movies made – let us know your favorite! Linda G.- Circulation Dept.

A Room With A View – by E.M. Forster. You may already know the plot, but this book is so well written and so romantic, you will not be able to put it down.   Will Lucy Honeychurch pick the right man? Also tune in to the wonderful Helena Bonham-Carter movie. Daniel Day-Lewis and Julian Sands are the love interests. *Sigh* One of my all-time favorite books. Stephanie C.- Circulation Dept.

Streaming Movies and More

Hunters (Amazon)
Nazi hunters discover hundreds of high-ranking Nazi officials conspiring to create a Fourth Reich in the U.S. Starring Al Pacino, the Hunters set out to bring the Nazi’s to justice and thwart their new plans. Warning – there is violence, and some scenes are hard to watch, but I found it riveting. Linda P.- Administration

Land of Girls (Netflix)
If you like Call the Midwife you will like this British series set in rural England during the second world war. Linda G., Circulation Dept.

Parasite (DVD)
An Oscar winning international movie about a poor family that makes their way into a wealthy household through lies. With unexpected twists, the movie will keep you engaged from start to finish. Elaine N.- Circulation Dept.

Self-Made (Netflix)
Starring Octavia Spencer, the true story of Madam C.J. Walker, who was the first female self-made millionaire in the early 1900’s. What’s better than some “girl power”. I loved it! Linda P.- Administration

Turner Classic Movies – (TCM – on Cable Providers)
Every Thursday, TCM has “New York in the 1970’s” as a theme. This week is Annie Hall at 8 PM and Manhattan at 10 PM. It’s a hoot to see New York back in the day, before the city was gentrified. Last week I watched Panic in Needle Park and The Taking of Pelham 123 – makes you remember when people WANTED to leave New York City and why! Watch them to take a trip back to the not too distant past…Stephanie C.- Circulation Dept.

Unorthodox (Netflix)
The story of a Hasidic Jewish woman in Brooklyn who flees an arranged marriage and is taken in by a group of musicians until her past comes calling. Compelling – recommended by Linda P.-Administration and Nancy M., Circulation

Podcasts

One of my favorite podcasts is Great Lives, a biographical series in which guests choose someone who has inspired their lives. Linda G.- Circulation Dept.
