When I retired from full time teaching it became important to explore ways outside the classroom to do something meaningful. One of the possible activities evolved from the poster collages. I could approach the work more systematically and no longer depend on the luck of the draw. I decided to collect cutouts which would feed the process. Almost all of my collages are started by first choosing a background and then buiding upon it. Photographs of Persian carpets, for example, make wonderful backgrounds. Early in the exploration I found myself working in a surprising way. I would lay out as many as ten background and work on ten collages simultaneously. At first I doubted the authenticity of working this way. Over the years I have come to accept it.
